The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) is urging the government to permanently remove the 11% import duty on cotton, which is set to be reinstated from January 1, 2026. CITI argues this duty will increase costs and harm the competitiveness of India's textile sector, especially as domestic cotton production is at a two-decade low. A delegation met with the Agriculture Minister, who assured them their concerns would be considered. The industry previously benefited from a duty exemption until December 31, 2025.
