India is constructing its first national highway tunnel beneath an active runway at Varanasi International Airport. The 450-meter underpass, part of a highway realignment, will allow uninterrupted traffic flow below while aircraft operate above. This Rs 250 crore project, set for completion by Q3 2027, aims to enhance road connectivity and facilitate airport expansion, including a runway extension. The tunnel is engineered for high safety standards, including blast resistance.
