The Punjab government is considering merging its district central cooperative banks (DCCBs) with the Punjab State Cooperative Bank (PSCB) to improve profitability and capital adequacy. Two proposals are on the table: merging all 20 DCCBs or a smaller group of 16. The move aims to enhance competitiveness against commercial banks and reduce administrative costs, as some DCCBs currently require government capital infusions to meet regulatory ratios. This initiative follows a similar proposal from 2017, with a consensus that it benefits farmers and the cooperative credit structure.
