Indian Railways is exploring the use of galvanized rails as a potential alternative to current NCC rails, aiming to increase track lifespan in humid and coastal regions. These rails could last over four times longer than regular steel rails, potentially reducing the annual ₹20,000 crore spent on track renewals. While initial procurement costs may be higher, lifecycle savings are anticipated. Standards for zinc thermal-sprayed steel rails are already approved, and Railways may begin sourcing them in phases.
