Delhi has become the first Union Territory to register First Information Reports (FIRs) for driving on the wrong side of the road, under Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita for rash or negligent driving. This move aims to deter hazardous road behavior, as wrong-side driving has increased and is a significant cause of accidents. While the offense is bailable, the FIR process involves arrest, bail, and vehicle seizure, making it a more stringent measure than the usual Rs 5,000 fine. FIRs will be registered selectively, focusing on high-risk situations.
