The Indian government is considering a new "Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC)" scheme to attract 120 Indian-origin scientists and researchers to IITs over five years. The initiative aims to strengthen India's higher education and research ecosystem, focusing on priority sectors like AI, semiconductors, and clean energy. The IIT Council, which discussed the proposal, also recommended analyzing reasons for IIT graduates pursuing PhDs abroad and exploring measures to improve domestic research pathways and MTech program relevance.
