Princess Jahanara commissioned the Begum ki Serai in 1650, a two-storey structure with ninety frescoed rooms, a courtyard, pool, and mosque. Inspired by an Isfahan serai, it featured shops and was praised by traveler François Bernier as "the most beautiful sarae in Hindustan." Shah Jahan's personal visit highlighted its significance and Jahanara's imperial standing. The serai, now known as Town Hall, had two entrances and was built with white limestone.
