New research on ancient arrowheads from South Africa suggests prehistoric communities may have used poison-tipped arrows as early as 60,000 years ago. Scientists discovered chemical traces of toxic plant alkaloids on five of ten examined artifacts, likely from the Boophone disticha plant. This finding significantly pushes back the known origins of poisoned weapons, previously thought to be around 8,000 years ago, indicating advanced knowledge of plant chemistry among early hunters.
