The Tamil Nadu government has expanded its reserved forest network by notifying 100 forest blocks across 10 districts between 2021 and 2025. This initiative adds approximately 135 sq km to the state's protected green cover, bringing the total to 26,585 sq km. The move aims to enhance ecological protection, conserve biodiversity, secure wildlife corridors, and improve climate resilience, with significant additions in districts like Theni and the Nilgiris to bolster habitat continuity and conservation efforts.
