India is accelerating the construction of four major hydropower projects on the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir, including Pakal Dul, Kiru, Kwar, and Ratle. Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has set strict deadlines, aiming for Pakal Dul and Kiru by December 2026 and Kwar by March 2028. This move, occurring while the Indus Waters Treaty is in abeyance, aims to bolster India's energy security and optimize its water resource utilization, which is closely monitored by Pakistan due to its reliance on the Indus basin for agriculture and water security.
