The Madras High Court's Madurai Bench has warned senior officials, including the Madurai Collector and Deputy Commissioner of Police, of contempt charges if they fail to provide a satisfactory explanation for obstructing the lighting of the Karthigai Deepam at Thirupparankundram hill. Justice G.R. Swaminathan noted that despite court orders allowing the ritual, prohibitory orders were issued and implementation was obstructed. The court has scheduled February 2, 2026, for framing charges unless proper cause is shown.
