The United Democratic Front (UDF) has won a crucial by-election in the Vizhinjam ward of Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation, defeating the Left Democratic Front (LDF) by 83 votes. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate finished third, leaving the BJP with 50 seats in the 101-member council, one short of a simple majority. The UDF increased its tally to 20 seats. Bypolls in two other local body wards saw the LDF and UDF each secure one victory.
