
Sadanand Vasant Date, a 1990-batch IPS officer and a hero of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, has assumed charge as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra. He succeeds Rashmi Shukla, the state's first woman DGP. Date, previously the chief of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), was repatriated at the Maharashtra government's request. His appointment, approved on December 31, grants him a two-year tenure, aligning with Supreme Court guidelines aimed at preventing political interference. Date is recognized for his bravery during the 26/11 attacks, where he sustained injuries while engaging terrorists, and for establishing Maharashtra's specialized commando unit, Force One.
