Tribal organizations in Assam, represented by the Coordination Committee of Tribal Organisations of Assam (CCTOA), have rejected a state government proposal to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities: Tai Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Motok, Koch-Rajbongshi, and Tea Tribes. The CCTOA argues that ST and Scheduled Caste (SC) are distinct constitutional categories and that these communities were previously identified as Other Backward Classes (OBCs). They contend that granting ST status would undermine the political reservation rights of existing ST communities and is being pursued for political expediency.
