Uganda's National Bureau for NGOs has ordered two human rights organizations, Chapter Four Uganda and the Human Rights Network for Journalists-Uganda (HRNJ-U), to cease operations days before a general election. The bureau cited activities prejudicial to national security. These groups have previously denounced rights violations, including alleged arbitrary detentions and torture of opposition supporters and journalists. The UN Human Rights Office also reported police and military use of live ammunition and abductions ahead of the vote. A government spokesperson did not comment on the UN report.
