As India approaches 2026, a critical need for enhanced citizen participation in governance is highlighted. Despite rising aspirations and pressure on governments for better outcomes, a significant gap exists between citizens and governing institutions, with participation often limited to voting. The article argues that democracy requires continuous engagement beyond elections, advocating for active integration of citizen involvement into governance structures. It suggests redefining citizenship beyond voting and strengthening local forums like ward sabhas to foster deeper, more responsive democratic systems.
