
India's Environment Ministry has removed the mandatory requirement for proof of land acquisition for non-coal mining projects seeking environmental clearance. This change, based on recommendations from the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC), acknowledges that land acquisition can proceed in phases after mining operations begin. The ministry cited practical difficulties and landowner consent issues as reasons for delinking land acquisition status from the initial grant of environmental clearance.
