The Madras High Court has stayed the release and circulation of a Tamil book allegedly targeting Justice GR Swaminathan, calling its title and caricature "highly derogatory and abusive." The court initiated suo motu contempt proceedings against the publisher, Keezhaikaatru Publishers, for allegedly scandalizing the judiciary. The book, related to Justice Swaminathan's verdict on lighting a lamp at the Thirupparankundram temple, was slated for release at the Chennai Book Fair. The court emphasized that while judgments can be criticized, personal attacks on judges are unacceptable and undermine public confidence.
