A protest erupted in Murshidabad, West Bengal, following the suicide of Booth Level Officer (BLO) Hamimul Islam, allegedly due to pressure from the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. His family and local TMC MLA cited excessive workload. However, a police investigation revealed Islam was also under severe distress from a Rs 20 lakh loan default by a TMC worker, Bulet Khan, who has since been arrested for abetting suicide. At least eight BLOs have reportedly died since the SIR process began.
