New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has sent a note of solidarity to jailed activist Umar Khalid. The letter, delivered to Khalid's parents during their visit to the US in December 2025, expresses Mamdani's thoughts on bitterness and states, "We are all thinking of you." Khalid's partner shared the note publicly after Mamdani's swearing-in. Khalid has been incarcerated for nearly five years in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots and was recently granted interim bail for his sister's wedding.
