Myanmar's military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) is leading in early results from the first phase of a three-part general election, according to the military-appointed election commission. The USDP has secured a majority of declared seats, including one for its leader, Khin Yi. Critics, however, deem the election illegitimate due to excluded opposition parties and repression, while the military cites a significant voter turnout of over six million people as a success. The polls are seen by the junta as a step towards political stability following the 2021 coup.
