The Madras High Court's Madurai Bench has warned Madurai district officials, including the Collector and Police Commissioner, of contempt charges if they fail to provide a satisfactory explanation for obstructing the lighting of the Karthigai Deepam at Thirupparankundram hill. Justice G.R. Swaminathan noted that despite court orders allowing the ritual, prohibitory orders were issued and police obstructed implementation. The court has scheduled February 2 for framing charges unless proper cause is shown, also questioning temple administration's handling of encroachments.
