
Despite Kanniyakumari leading Tamil Nadu in natural rubber production with 22,000 tonnes annually from 28,000 hectares, a long-standing demand for a rubber park or large-scale rubber-based industries remains unfulfilled. Thousands of workers are employed in the district's plantations, but a lack of such facilities prompts many young people to seek employment elsewhere. Previous proposals dating back to the 1990s, including a planned park in Chenbagaramanputhoor, have been halted for various reasons.
