
The Election Commission (EC) informed the Supreme Court that it is empowered to examine citizenship for electoral purposes, including inclusion or exclusion from voter rolls. Appearing for the EC, senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi argued that the Electoral Registration Officer can conduct limited inquiries into citizenship for election-related matters. While an adverse finding would lead to name deletion from rolls, it does not automatically result in deportation, though such cases may be referred to the central government for further action.
