The Kerala Rail Development Corporation (KRDCL) has proposed extending the Sabari rail line from Angamaly-Erumely to Punalur, Thiruvananthapuram, and the Vizhinjam international seaport. This proposal, previously considered in 2021, is being revived due to increased traffic density and potential future congestion from the Vizhinjam port. A preliminary survey for an Erumely-Thiruvananthapuram extension was conducted in 2013 but stalled due to poor returns. KRDCL suggests the current traffic scenario warrants reconsideration of the feasibility study.
