Oxford University Press (OUP) India has issued a public apology for "unverified statements" about 17th-century ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the 2003 book "Shivaji: Hindu King in Islamic India" by American historian James Laine. The apology, issued after a directive from the Bombay High Court, acknowledges that certain statements on specific pages were not adequately verified and expresses regret for any distress caused to Shivaji Maharaj's descendant, Udayanraje Bhosale, and the public. The book had previously sparked protests and controversy in 2004.
