Oxford University Press (OUP) India has issued a public apology for "unverified statements" about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the 2003 book "Shivaji: Hindu King in Islamic India" by American author James Laine. The apology, directed to Udayanraje Bhosale, a descendant of Shivaji Maharaj, acknowledges that statements on specific pages were not adequately verified and expresses regret for any distress caused. The book had previously sparked protests and controversy in 2004, leading to incidents like the ransacking of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute.
