India is set to construct its first underwater road-rail tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River in Assam, connecting Gohpur and Numaligarh. An inter-ministerial committee has granted in-principle approval for the 15.8 km twin-tube project, estimated at Rs 18,600 crore. One tube will carry a single electrified rail track, while the other will accommodate two-way road traffic. The tunnel aims to significantly reduce travel time, enhance strategic connectivity for security forces, and boost links to northeastern states, with completion anticipated within five years of work commencement.
