A large international genetic study involving over one million individuals suggests many mental health conditions share common genetic risks rather than distinct biological origins. Researchers identified five major genetic factors, including compulsive, schizophrenia-bipolar, neurodevelopmental, internalizing, and substance use dimensions, which collectively explain a significant portion of shared inherited risk. The findings indicate that common genetic variants increase vulnerability to multiple conditions, rather than a single gene causing a specific illness.
