Mattel has launched its first autistic Barbie doll as part of its Fashionistas line, aiming to promote diversity and inclusion. Developed over 18 months in collaboration with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN), the doll features sensory-friendly accessories like noise-cancelling headphones and a fidget spinner, flexible joints, and a slightly averted gaze. While many praise the doll for representing neurodivergent children and fostering understanding, some online discussions question if a single design can encompass the spectrum's diversity. In India, a portion of sales will benefit the India Autism Center.
