Maharashtra Women's Commission Flags Lapses at Residential School After Student's Death

Maharashtra State Women's Commission chairperson Rupali Chakankar has flagged serious lapses at a government-run residential school in Thane district following the death of a 16-year-old tribal student on December 25, 2025. A preliminary probe revealed alleged forced urine pregnancy tests on returning students and security breaches allowing unauthorized individuals to take girls home. A 17-year-old boy has been detained under POCSO and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for sexual harassment and abetment of suicide. The commission has ordered an inquiry and directed an immediate halt to the pregnancy testing practice.
