England batsman Jacob Bethell scored an unbeaten 142 in the fifth Ashes Test at Sydney, becoming the fourth youngest England cricketer to achieve a maiden Test century in 50 years. At 22 years and 76 days, he is also the second youngest to score an Ashes hundred this century. Former captain Nasser Hussain praised Bethell's calm, composed, and technically sound innings, calling it that of a 'proper No 3' and noting his solidity compared to Ollie Pope, whom he replaced.
