Bangladesh has launched the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR), a system by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to register all mobile handsets. The NEIR verifies each phone's IMEI against a national database, linking it to the user's National Identity (NID) and SIM card. This aims to combat illegal imports, ensure customs duty collection, prevent telecom fraud, and identify counterfeit devices. The system also limits SIM cards per NID to ten and requires special registration for foreign-purchased phones.
