The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed a portable water desalination system called SWaDeS. This system, designed for soldiers in the field, can purify seawater and saline water to meet drinking standards. It is available in manual and engine-operated versions, catering to different group sizes and salinity levels. The technology, developed by Defence Laboratory, Jodhpur, also has potential applications in freshwater-stressed civil areas and coastal installations.
