India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed a unique 21-character Battery Pack Aadhaar Number (BPAN) for electric vehicle batteries. This system aims to ensure end-to-end traceability from raw material extraction to recycling or disposal. Producers or importers must assign BPANs, which will be visible on the battery, and upload dynamic data to an official portal. The initiative seeks to enhance transparency, accountability, and sustainability in the battery ecosystem, supporting second-life usage and efficient recycling, particularly as EVs constitute 80-90% of India's lithium-ion battery demand.
