NASA's SWOT satellite captured unprecedented high-resolution data of a tsunami generated by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. Contrary to expectations of a single, smooth wave, the satellite observed a complex pattern of interacting and scattering waves. This detailed observation, combined with DART buoy data, challenges previous assumptions about tsunami behavior and could significantly improve future modeling and forecasting of these giant waves.
