IIT Madras researchers have developed ramjet-assisted artillery shells that can extend the range of existing 155 mm guns by nearly 50 percent without compromising lethality. The innovation integrates a ramjet engine into standard shells, providing sustained propulsion after firing. Trials showed significant range increases across platforms like ATAGS, Dhanush, and Vajra K-9 guns. This project, a collaboration with the Indian Army since 2020, aims to enhance firepower cost-effectively and aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
