India has imposed a three-year safeguard duty on select steel products, ranging from 11-12%, to curb a surge in cheap imports, primarily from China. The duty, effective from April 21, 2025, will decrease annually from 12% in the first year to 11% in the third. This measure, recommended by the Directorate General of Trade Remedies due to a "sudden, sharp, and significant increase" in imports threatening domestic industry, excludes specialty steel and certain developing nations, though China, Vietnam, and Nepal are included. This follows a temporary 200-day tariff imposed earlier.
