India Aims to Become Leading Global Maritime Hub by 2047, Says Minister

Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur outlined India's ambition to become a leading global maritime power and shipping hub by 2047. He highlighted that nearly 95% of India's trade by volume and around 70% by value is handled through ports. Over the past decade, port capacity and cargo handling efficiency have significantly improved, aided by mechanisation and digitalisation. The government is also focusing on strengthening the shipbuilding sector through policy measures and budgetary support to enhance export competitiveness and economic growth.
