India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has banned the advance tipping feature on ride-hailing apps, a system allowing passengers to tip upfront when booking a ride. This feature, initially launched by Namma Yatri and adopted by platforms like Uber, Ola, and Rapido, was intended to signal willingness to pay more for faster pickups. Regulators intervened following consumer complaints about repeated prompts and perceived pressure to tip, aiming to address potential coercive practices.
