The power ministry has submitted the Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE)-III norms proposal to the Prime Minister's Office following stakeholder consultations, Union Heavy Industries Minister H D Kumaraswamy said. The auto industry remains divided over concessions for small cars, with Tata Motors opposing leniency due to safety concerns, while Maruti Suzuki supports exemptions to focus on improving larger vehicles' fuel efficiency. The CAFE-III phase is expected to begin in April 2027, with draft regulations under review by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.
