Farmers in Ambala and Kurukshetra districts are increasingly cultivating oilseed crops like mustard and toria, with acreage rising significantly this rabi season. This shift is attributed to lower input costs, better crop rotation possibilities, and the viability of a three-cropping system. Experts and farmers highlight that oilseeds require less fertilizer and irrigation than wheat, and allow for an additional crop, such as sunflower, after mustard harvest. However, farmers and unions express concerns about timely government procurement and ensuring Minimum Support Price (MSP) to further incentivize oilseed cultivation.
