CII Report Proposes Green Steel Mandate to Boost Demand and Cut Emissions by 2030

A Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) report suggests mandating 26% certified green steel use in public projects over Rs 1 crore from FY2028 could generate up to 16 million tonnes per annum demand by FY2030, potentially reducing 20.9 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. The study notes most steel producers are prepared to supply green steel if supported by clear mandates, tender clauses, monitoring frameworks, and limited fiscal incentives like GST relief or carbon offsets during initial years.
