The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is proposing a shift in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) methodology from a fixed-base system to a chain-linked approach. This change aims to update sectoral and industry weights annually to better reflect evolving industrial structures, addressing limitations of the current 2011-12 base year. The proposal, detailed in a discussion paper, invites stakeholder feedback by January 25, 2026, and aligns India’s industrial data practices with international standards, though it may lead to more frequent data revisions.
