Indian Railways Nears Full Electrification, Reducing Diesel Use Amid Energy Security Concerns

Indian Railways has electrified nearly 99.4% of its Broad Gauge network, reducing diesel consumption by 178 crore litres in 2024-25—a 62% decline since 2016-17. This shift from diesel to electric traction enhances energy security by lowering dependence on imported crude oil, particularly amid West Asia tensions affecting global oil markets. The transition also supports cost savings and climate commitments, with electricity sourced from a diversified mix including renewables, coal, and hydro power.
