Kolkata Metro Railway has commissioned a 6.4 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Central station on the Blue Line to improve energy efficiency and passenger safety during power outages. The system, the first microgrid battery installation at an Indian Metro station, can power trains to the next station at 55 km/h and maintain tunnel ventilation. Officials highlighted its compact design, 14-year lifespan, and potential to reduce carbon footprint and energy costs. Plans include expanding the system to capture excess regenerative energy.
