India has surpassed China to become the world's largest rice producer, with its share of global production exceeding 28%. According to a USDA report, India produced 152 million metric tonnes of rice in December 2025, compared to China's 146 million metric tonnes. Indian rice exports are a key component of the nation's foreign policy, reaching 172 countries.
