German media group Axel Springer has agreed to acquire the Telegraph Media Group, publisher of Britain's Daily Telegraph and its Sunday edition, for £575 million (approximately $766 million). The deal ends a prolonged ownership saga and aims to position the Telegraph as a leading center-right media outlet in the English-speaking world, with plans to expand into the U.S. Axel Springer, which owns Bild, Welt, and Politico, had previously attempted to buy the Telegraph over 20 years ago. The acquisition follows the Barclay family's decision to sell amid debt concerns and blocks a rival bid from a consortium backed by RedBird Capital Partners and UAE's Sheikh Mansour, which faced UK government opposition over foreign state ownership.
