Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced plans for Southern Railway to double train capacity in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Ernakulam by 2030. This expansion aims to meet rising passenger demand and reduce congestion. The initiative includes significant upgrades to coaching terminals, such as redeveloping Chennai Egmore station with airport-like passenger segregation, building a new Perambur terminal, and enhancing Tambaram station for suburban services. Podanur Junction in Coimbatore will also be developed as a second terminal. These upgrades are part of a broader strategy to enhance the railway network and improve nationwide connectivity.
