Government Sets 30.3 Million Tonne Wheat Procurement Target for 2026-27 Season

The Indian government has set a wheat procurement target of 30.3 million tonnes for the 2026-27 Rabi Marketing Season, similar to last year’s level. The target was finalized at a meeting of State Food Secretaries. Paddy procurement is estimated at 7.6 million tonnes, with 0.77 million tonnes of coarse grains including millets also targeted. Wheat output is expected to reach 120 million tonnes due to favorable conditions. The Food Corporation of India’s wheat stocks are projected at 18.2 million tonnes as of April 1, 2026. India recently lifted a four-year wheat export ban, allowing initial shipments. Pilots for improved rice supply and QR code tagging on foodgrain packaging are underway in several states.
